The Colonial Governors: Edward Winslow (1633-34) First Term

Image
As  mentioned previously , the Mayflower voyage set sail for the new world and they landed on the now United States in November of 1620. It was a foolish idea to try to set up a brand new colony in the dead of fall and winter and half the people on board would be dead by May of 1621. After the first Governor John Carver perished, William Bradford took over and held the colony together for the next twelve years. In 1633, a change was made. Bradford's right hand man Edward Winslow was elected Governor by British Parliament.                                                "Whatchu lookin at?" - Edward Winslow                            So who was Edward Winslow? He was born in 1595 in Worcestershire, England and graduated from King's School (which still stands) in 1611. He was an apprentice contract...

The Plymouth Colony was established in 1620 when pilgrims immigrated from England to the new world aboard the Mayflower. Unfortunately the eggheads in London who thought it was a good idea to settle in the middle of the damn fall & winter paid for it when half the patrons aboard the Mayflower died either on the journey or directly after. By 12, he was very interested in religion and was mentored by future Plymouth colonist William Brewster. When King James took the throne in 16...

When King James decided to form the Virginia Company in 1606, its mission was to colonize new worlds. That year, the Company landed on what's now known as Virginia in the United States, (the subject of the movie Pocahontas). In 1617, a group of men led by Leiden Separatist Robert Cushman wanted to lead another expedition to the "new world" to get away from the British national religion. 3 years later with the help of merchant mogul Thomas Weston, they got the financial backing to send the boat Mayflower to the new world. As fate would have it, they didn't land in Virginia. They landed on a rock in modern day Plymouth, Massachusetts. Thus, Plymouth Rock and the Plymouth Colony was formed in November of 1620.         ...
