WaMS The very first Massachusetts election was the battle to be the first State Governor following the Declaration of Independence. General Thomas Gage of the British army was appointed Massachusetts Governor by King George the 3rd in 1774 one year before the Revolutionary War started in Concord. Once the War started, he left his post as Governor to be the commander in chief of the British troops. After the Battle of Bunker Hill that the British technically won, Gage sailed home to England and was replaced by William Howe as commander in chief in October of 1775.
